One of the longest produced and most popular models. Produced in many variants, for all types of civil and military users. Many unique vehicles were built using 416 traction heads, including the Lesa 6 x 6 dump trucks, Schwing Concrete Pumps, and the famous / infamous, Werner, UniKnick articulating log skidder.

The closest derivative of the original Unimog. A direct descendant of the earlier 2010, 401, and 411 models. A very popular model in Germany due to its fuel thrifty nature. Over the course of production OM 602, 615, 616 and 621 motors have been used in the 421 models. The popularity of a small, fuel efficient, Unimog still exists, as evidenced by the U600’s modern replacement: The LBU series, U90 Turbo and U100L Turbo produced up until 2001.

427.100 U 1000 was the only non-turbocharged 427 model. All wheel steering (Code C54) was only offered on the standard models of U1600 / U1650. Not on high output, or increased GVW versions.
The "L" in the model number in all Unimogs stands for longer frame. The additional length is all behind the rear axle. In the case of the two 1650's it's a 376 mm difference. The "standard" or short frame models are designed to be used with a full range of rear implements and such as PTO's and three point hitches, backhoes, etc. The longer frame models are designed for installation of fixed bodies and are not available with Rear PTO's, three point hitches, nor suitable for heavy rear mounted implements. A lot of people assume the "L" is an abbreviation for LKW or Lorry? Nope, it simply is the first letter of "lang", the German word for long.
There is some variation in how MB used the designation. For instance instead of the model U1700 L/38, they had, for a time, a model called "U 1700 LL" meaning long frame and longer wheelbase. They finally standardized on the current convention of all "L" models are wheelbase of 3250 mm except when designated with "/37, /38, etc.." (Of course they had to violate their own system when they built a few long wheelbase models with short frames.) Thus you have such as a "U2150 /38". Look Ma. No "L"

* The models marked with an asterisk are all "special project" vehicles and were never series production.
Notes: All engines are the Euro I, standard versions. Euro II engines were options after 1992. Engine numbers will be different.
Starting with the U1800 the engines were all turbocharged and charge air cooled (intercooler) . OM 366 LA engines start with the desigination 35X rather than 366. The 356.9XX is an engine meeting Euro I emissions standards. The 357.9XX model number designates and engine that complies with Euro II emissions
The 437 series represents the ultimate evolution of the SBU series Unimogs. There have been myriad versions produced since it’s inception as the 435 back in 1977. Production ceased on March 31st 2002. There are more options and S/A’s that apply to this range than any other Unimogs.

I've spent quite some time trying to get documentation of the serial numbers of Unimog 404s that were built in any given year, and have never been able to find such a list. After some time, and through comparing serial numbers and years of many Unimogs with this production list, I have come to the conclusion that Unimog 404s started out at serial number #00001, and counted up sequentially. So, the serial numbers indicated on this page are purely my calculations, with no documentation to back them up. But they should provide some sort of guideline. Of course there will be exceptions, since some trucks were built one year, and maybe not titled until the next year. There is also a rumor that some trucks, upon being factory refurbished, were provided with a new serial number. I have never seen any examples of this first hand, but I have heard stories about it. -Ron DePugh
